Controversial road expansion approved by Kitchener city council
The City of Kitchener approved the Biehn Drive road expansion at city council earlier this week. Approval came after ten delegations that spoke against the motion. Many of which were concerned for the wetlands upon which this road expansion would be built.
The Biehn Drive road expansion is planned to connect Biehn Drive with Strasburg Road, going through a wetland area in the Doon neighbourhood. Discussion over this expansion has been happening since 1989.
The City says that this expansion would be supporting the new housing developments in the area and increasing accessibility for emergency response vehicles.
Residents have been fighting to protect the wetlands in the area for 35 years and they continued to do so at this week’s city council meeting.
