February is Black History Month and the Nanaimo African Heritage Society (NAHS) is highlighting the culture and remembering the black pioneers from Vancouver Island.
CHLY spoke with Shalema Gantt, the president and founder of the NAHS. She talked about why she started the society and the importance of understanding the history of the black pioneers.
As well, CHLY takes a look into two people who pioneered paths for black people on Vancouver Island.
