On a day when people look to groundhogs to predict the end of winter, the south shore of Nova Scotia is calling upon Lucy the Lobster to tell them when spring is going to happen.
Lucy’s meteorological skills are being tested on Friday as part of the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl Festival when she will mark Groundhog Day in her own special way, crawling out of the ocean. If she sees her shadow, it means six more weeks of winter.
And “Shellfies” with Lucy are allowed.
The month-long celebration of the succulent shellfish cracked open Thursday. It includes businesses all along the South Shore, from Barrington, the lobster capital of Canada, to Peggys Cove, and as far inland as Kejimkujik and New Ross.
Festival co-ordinator Stephanie Miller Vincent says that with more than 100 events at 80 different businesses around the South Shore, it’s a great excuse to get out of the house. And it’s especially vital for local businesses after a disappointing tourist season.
