On January 26 at 7:00pm, Windsor-Essex will be celebrating the start of Black History Month.
Organized by the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, and the Windsor West Indian Association, the kick-off event hopes to celebrate the achievements of black peoples in Canada. Windsor itself plays a large role in Black history due to being along the Detroit River border, causing the city to hold the story of many notable Black historical figures.
With Canada being a country that celebrates its diversity, it’s important to understand that the country was made up of many different peoples and stories. Understanding these stories can bring an increased appreciation for the country as a whole.
On January 25, CJAM spoke to Irene Moore Davis, President of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society. She elaborated on what the event is and why it was started.
