Canada Post revealed a new stamp in honour of Mary Ann Shadd on Jan. 23.
Shadd was the first Black woman in North America — and the first woman in Canada — to edit and publish a newspaper. She was a teacher, a lawyer, an abolitionist, and an activist who made her mark in history. The Windsorite won multiple awards and been recognized in many ways for her role in Black history, with this stamp adding to that collection.
Her descendants today are passionate in their own missions on Black history as well: one of those descendants is Irene Moore Davis, president of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society.
On Jan. 25, CJAM spoke with Irene Moore Davis about the unveiling of the Mary Ann Shadd stamp and her descendant’s feelings about it.
