Local post secondary institutions are left pondering what Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s Monday Jan 22nd announcement on capping International Student Visas will mean for them.
This move will reduces the number of international students entering Canada by 35%.
Shelley Carter-Rose, VP of Student Affairs at the College of New Caledonia isn’t entirely sure what to expect just yet but acknowledges that this issue has been brewing for a long time, “This [International Student Program] has been around for 30+ years and it just continues to grow.”
Despite Minister Miller’s claim that these measures are not targeted at individual students, Lukas Dauksas at University of Northern BC’s Students Union remarks, “It does affect their lives.”
UNBC Admin and CNC SU were contacted but comments were not provided before publication.
