The district of Kitimat along with support from the Haisla Council have chosen the artist who will carve the totem pole that will be placed at the southeast end of the new Haisla bridge.
First year instructor at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art and a 5th generation Haisla artist Nathan Wilson was selected officially Jan. 4.
Wilson talks with CFNR about his background and family of artists and what it means to him to share his culture and art.
Nathan’s uncle Chris Wilson holds the waw̓áis where the pole will be raised. According to Nathan, waw̓áis is a territory that is held by an individual or family and often has a name associated with it. It is managed by harvesting and by trapping.
It is anticipated that the totem pole will be finished and installed by the summer.
