Art Harrison from Trail, BC has joined the Alzheimer’s Society of BC this January as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Harrison, who recently relocated to Vancouver, has been living with dementia since 2019.
His family has a long history with Alzheimer’s. His mother and three of his older siblings all lived with the disease before him.
Speaking about people living with Alzheimer’s, Harrison said, “I think we need to have a voice for ourselves and we need to be able to say what things are important to us. Not be treated as a patient but treated as a human being. Treated as a person.”
Harrison joined the Alzheimer’s Society of BC to help bring attention to the disease and reduce stigma surrounding it. His work this month has consisted of online meetings, interviews and being part of a forum studied by university researchers.
