Over $500,000 in BC government funding will go towards fire departments in the Kootenays, according to a media release on Jan. 11.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) will receive $473,602 for their fire services training program. This includes their new recruitment strategy that was announced in November as well as other forms of training for current firefighters.
The Nelson Fire Department will also receive $30,000 for Fire Officer 1 Training and Rapid Intervention Firefighter Safety Devices and the Salmo Fire Department will receive $29,343.43 for equipment renewal.
Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson/Creston was quoted in the release saying, “in small communities, neighbours support each other in so many ways, including as part of our volunteer and composite fire departments. This funding will help provide the equipment and training that our firefighters need.”
CJLY spoke with Tristan Fehst, Regional Deputy Fire Chief for the RDCK, about the funding and current status of their new recruitment program.
