Local ski hills Whitewater and Red Mountain saw a delayed start to the season with Whitewater opening on Dec. 15 and Red Mountain opening on Dec. 28.
But despite the slow start, Whitewater General Manager Rebeckah Hornung says their 322 cm of total snowfall is comparable to recent years. They are also ranked near the top of many charts put out by Snow Seekers, a website that tracks conditions of ski hills in western Canada.
The late season opening did however impact staff at Whitewater and they saw a lower number of travellers throughout the holiday season.
Whitewater now officially has all lifts open but some terrain remains closed due to avalanche risk. Red Mountain currently has 6 of their 8 lifts open, giving access to 93 per cent of their 118 runs.
