The West Kootenays are experiencing the coldest temperatures of the winter so far. In Nelson this coming Friday, it could reach as low as -36 degrees Celsius.
Due to the extreme weather homeless people and shelters are in need. CJLY spoke with the La Nina shelter in Trail, the temporary homeless shelter in Castlegar and Stepping Stones in Nelson for information on how homeless people can withstand this cold spell and how the community can help.
Sheila Adcock, the program manager for the La Nina Shelter mentioned that they are in need of donations of warm clothes and blankets. The temporary shelter in Castlegar is looking for donations of coffee creamer, hand warmers and fresh food. Stepping Stones is short on blankets and said warm clothes can be dropped off at the Hub.
Nelson Cares is also opening a temporary 24 hour warming centre at the Salvation Army building located at 601 Vernon Street.
