For the first time since 2018, the Alberta Winter Games are being held once again. With 18 different sports to partake in, youth from all over Alberta are going to compete.
The 2018 Games were held in Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Five years and a pandemic later, the games are staying in the north as Grande Prairie will play host to the games from Feb. 16-19. CFWE spoke with Mayor Jackie Clayton to learn more.
Grande Prairie has a history of hosting large sporting events: the Canada Summer Games in 1995; the Arctic Winter Games in 2010; the Alberta Summer Games in 2000 and 2018. The city is also hosting the upcoming National Aboriginal Hockey Championships from May 5-11.
The sports are going to be held in multiple different locations throughout the city, the County of Grande Prairie and the MD of Greenview.
