A ringette association has launched in Smithers this winter, causing quite a stir in the BC north. This new association joins the existing Houston and Terrace teams, who describe it as “momentous”.
On Saturday, December 16, Smithers invited the public to “come try ringette”. Houston and Terrace put on a rousing exhibition game to showcase the sport. But before the game, everyone was invited to lace up their skates and try some ringette drills.
President Dani Huisman, coach Jaden Bester and several of the day’s participants provide an overview of the sport, how it differs from hockey, and the soft skills players will carry into other areas of life.
Most importantly, ringette is an inclusive sport: at the national level, there are transgender policies in place. The episode ends by offering several ways to get involved, for people of all ages and skills. Ringette is a friendly, welcoming game.
