Above average temperatures and rainfall has left the Prince George area without much snow or ice over the solstice season. It has led to poor snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skating, pond, hockey, skiing, and most outdoor winter recreation.
Scuttling their plans for competitions and other events, both the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and the Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval have been stranded in limbo for some time now.
Both organizations lament the current conditions but look forward to colder days and are making plans for the future. Kathy Lewis of the Ice Oval joins us to describe the challenges in creating the ice year after year, and describes what a refrigerated “chilly oval” could look like. The current oval is not refrigerated so it melts as the temperature rises.
Meanwhile John Bowes of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club describes the futility of making snow in above freezing temperatures, and potential benefits of asphalt paths.
