The Nelson Roller Derby team has started a petition to assess the level of interest within the community regarding the creation of a roller rink in the city.
Owen Nakamura started this petition a few days ago and reports that it has already garnered over 300 signatures.
Currently, the team practices at Hume Elementary school but it is not large enough to host games.
This petition will remain active for the next month. Nelson Roller Derby intends to present it to the city council during a meeting scheduled for Jan. 25.
While they want a dedicated space for roller derby, Nelson Roller Derby also believes this will benefit the rest of the community because of the need for a multi-use venue. Danielle McGrath, a member of the Roller Derby team, mentioned that the team is currently undergoing a rebuilding phase and is actively seeking new members.
