Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) say it is “very concerning” to the Six Nations community that the Grand River Métis Council are claiming a substantial amount of land within the Haldimand Tract, as Bill C-53 moves through the parliamentary process.
Bill C-53 is act that would recognize certain Métis governments in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan, to give effect to treaties with those governments and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
SNEC said in a public notice to the community that “all inherent, Indigenous rights pertaining to the lands of the Haldimand Tract belong uniquely and exclusively to the Six Nations people to whom alone it was granted in 1784.” A map on the Grand River Métis Council’s indicates the territory within the Haldimand Tract, SNEC said.
Bill C-53 currently sits in standing committee in the house of commons and awaits royal assent to officially become a law.
