Smithers town council met on Tuesday night for the last regular council meeting of 2023. On the docket was:
The Wetzin’kwah Community Forest Foundation presented a year review to council, who were quite impressed with the outreach, community support and impact this organization has had in the Bulkley Valley this past year.
A presentation was made about the town of Smithers Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which underwent community survey and engagement sessions this year. The plan has not been updated since 1998.
The town needs to formulate a plan for insurance and safety to library workers as they continue to operate as a warming centre for Smithers’ unhoused population.
There was discussion about a possible animal control by-law change (colloquially known as the “Outdoor Animal Act“). The act currently controls licensing of pets and cattle, but does not include cats.
