In spite of limited resources, Home Base Housing has been able to add 10 beds to their In From The Cold (IFTC) emergency shelter to meet increasing demand.
Home Base Housing is a non-profit organization offering a variety of services, ranging from emergency shelters to support in securing permanent housing.
The jump from 24 to 34 beds comes at a crucial time, with temperatures dropping and the homelessness crisis reaching “a tipping point”, according to a recent study released by The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO).
This also marks a return to the shelter’s capacity pre-pandemic.
“It is a big deal, because since COVID, we have a lot more guidelines and restrictions through Public Health that we need to follow…,” explains Amanda Brierley, Shelter Services Manager. “…We feel like we are at our max, but that it is manageable at this point.”
