When we think of the term “caregiver”, the image that comes to mind is often an older adult taking care of an aging family member. The Eva Marsden Centre, a senior support centre in Notre Dame de Grace, is bringing attention to and providing support for a whole different demographic — youth caregivers.
Across Canada, 1.25 million caregivers are between 15 to 24 years old. The Centre says that in Montreal West, a lot of youth caregivers are an under-recognized group which does not recognize their own importance.
Youth caregivers are now able to drop in on the current caregiver support circle. And over this month, Wallace will be phasing in a youth specific circle and support network where youth can receive guidance and connect with each other.
