The Government of Alberta is inviting Albertans to share their perspectives on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) through an online survey. MAID provides eligible individuals the opportunity to receive assistance from a medical practitioner in ending their life. There are specific criteria to be met for eligibility, and the approval of multiple medical professionals is required.
At the federal level, the Canadian government has halted any expansion of MAID until spring 2027, while a series of reviews are conducted nationwide. The Alberta survey includes questions regarding oversight, regulations, and protections, and is open until December 20, 2024.
Jeanette Wildman, Cultural Liaison at Stoney Health Services, emphasizes the need for the government to enhance education around this sensitive topic and better inform the public.
Additionally, Wildman highlighted the significance of incorporating spirituality into these discussions, as it has been largely absent from the conversation surrounding this complex issue.
