At last week’s regular meeting, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) council approved the renewal of the contract to replace self-contained breathing apparatus. These tools provide breathable air to firefighters operating in hazardous conditions.
CBRM Fire and Emergency Services Chief Director Mark Bettens says the current equipment used by local firefighters is nearing or exceeding their recommended lifespan.
He says it will allow departments from Gabarus to Southside Boularderie to Scotchtownto support each on the scene if they need to share the equipment.
Bettens told CKOA News that “Everybody’s going to have the exact same equipment and I can’t tell you, from a fire perspective, how important that is and how good it is that’s all going to be new.”
Bettens says they hope to have the new breathing apparatus in three weeks.
