New efforts are being made to try to refloat the Tim S. Dool, the 225-metre long laker stuck in the St. Lawrence Seaway. On November 23 the ship, loaded with grain, was on its way to Quebec City when it struck the Crysler Island Shoal on the American side of the Seaway outside of the navigation channel.
The U.S. Coast Guard and partners in the Canadian Coast Guard and Seaway management, attempted to refloat the ship using tugboats. That did not work and now barges are coming to lighten the vessel by removing cargo.
Commander Jeff Bybee of the U.S. Coast Guard said the ship was not in the way of other shipping, there were no injuries and no damage to ship, the environment or its cargo. Officials hope the ship will be out of the way within about 10 days, before the official Seaway winter closure on January 5, 2025.
