Peterborough’s Little Lake is host to the Centennial Fountain with its water spout that rises to a height which can be seen throughout the city. Peterborough’s 2025 Draft Budget proposed turning off the Fountain as a way to save it’s $111,800 operating cost. Peterborough City Council decided to keep the Fountain running.
Turning off the Centennial Fountain as a way to cut costs has been suggested in each budget since 2020. It was first recommended in a Budget and Service Analysis report, undertaken by KPMG in 2020. It identified the Centennial Fountain as “discretionary” spending.
Peterborough’s Mayor Jeff Leal has been a passionate supporter of keeping the Centennial Fountain running each time it has been brought up in Council.
“I’m getting a bit tired that this Fountain keeps getting kicked around during every budget cycle,” says Leal.
