Shelters across Winnipeg are at capacity. The Winnipeg Humane Society alone cares for around 240 animals on site, with an additional 200 in foster homes. With shelters, full efforts are needed to care for the over 100 thousand community cats in Winnipeg.
Lynne Scott runs Craig Street Cats, a feral cat management program and kitten rescue. Due to the loss of its resident vet and increasing costs for food and care, Craig Street Cats had to close its adoption services and will eventually have to close its doors.
Scott started Craig Street Cats in 2007 after finding a series of kittens near her home. She quickly realized that her neighbourhood had a severe issue with stray cats. Many of these cats are feral and avoid humans, but Scott advocates for their well-being, especially during winter, encouraging residents to provide outdoor shelter, food, and water.
