Cuts loom over The College of New Caledonia (CNC) as projected enrollment declines. This follows the IRCC’s recently announced additional approximately 20% reduction in immigration targets and a rearrangement of Classification of Instructional Programs, or CIP codes, which impacts eligibility for post-graduate work permits.
According to Shelley Carter-Rose, CNC’s VP of Student Affairs & Interim VP Academic, several CNC programs will now no longer function as work-permit pathways. Carter-Rose elaborates, “Ethically we should not accept students into programs when we know that they would not be eligible for a post-graduate work permit.”
The college is working to align programs with the updated codes, and shift recruitment strategies toward domestic students. These efforts will not offset immediate revenue shortfalls though. The rapid decline in international student enrollment has pushed CNC to take actions which will prevent a deficit.
