Non-profits working to address food insecurity in Halifax are experiencing heightened demand as residents are increasingly seeking food bank services.
According to findings from an October report commissioned by Food Banks Canada, food bank usage has increased 53.6 per cent in Nova Scotia since 2019 – and has soared by 21.11 per cent in the past year alone.
“Food immediately disappears,” says Öykü Su Gürler, of the student-run free kitchen Loaded Ladle. “There’s huge lineups.”
As residents increasingly feel the pinch, some community organizations are stepping up to provide temporary relief. CKDU spoke with Gürler and other food kitchen volunteers across the city to learn more about how mutual-aid groups are working to combat food insecurity.
