Sophiasburgh Central School in Demorestville, Prince Edward County, was the big winner in an Ontario wide Battery Blitz contest sponsored by Call2Reycle and Earth Rangers.
Eighty-nine elementary schools from across Ontario took the challenge to see who could collect the most used batteries in one month. Sophiasburgh won the contest hands down by collecting 821 kilograms worth. The tiny rural school has only seven classrooms and 156 students but their enthusiasm rallied family, friends and the entire community to collect batteries of all types.
Students were inspired by a presentation given by Earth Rangers, the largest children’s conservation organization in the world with over 350,000 members and a mission to create a generation of conservationists. Earth Rangers and Call2Recycle have been partnering since 2015 to run the contest, and have collected over 100,000 kg of used batteries from across Canada.
Students decided to upgrade the playground equipment with their $5000.00 prize.
