The City of Nanaimo is hoping to encourage more people to the city’s downtown to support local shops and businesses.
It is two months into the first phase of the Design Commercial project that will continue until May of next year shutting down Commercial Street.
To encourage new and returning shoppers to visit the downtown area to support local businesses and services, the city offered some free on-street parking in the downtown area. But one city councillor did not think that was enough.
Councillor Hilary Eastmure moved that city staff make a report on options to provide free two-hour parking within City-owned parkades at a city council meeting on October 21.
Now at the city council meeting on November 18, council looked at options on how to expand the free time-limited parking into the city-owned parkades.
