Montreal’s Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) says migration cutbacks risks targeting the most vulnerable, without fixing the crises in housing and social services.
In August, Quebec announced a freeze on some low-wage temporary foreign work streams in Montreal. Canada introduced its own freeze in regions with unemployment rates above six percent this fall. Both jurisdictions have announced additional cutbacks to temporary and permanent migration.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) organizers said the changes are causing panic among migrant workers in Montreal. While the migration cutbacks will push some people to leave, others will go underground, the IWC says.
