The Agnes Etherington Arts Centre has announced a $2M contribution from Canadian Heritage’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, which is being used for renovation of the historic Etherington House.
Director of the Agnes, Emelie Chhangur, called the accomplishment “validating” in an interview with CFRC, as the art center transforms with the vision of becoming a cultural and community hub.
Agnes Etherington donated the neo-georgian house to Queen’s University in 1954 to be turned into a community art gallery. The house continued to be expanded upon, until this spring when the additions to the original heritage building were torn down for the construction of Agnes Re-Imagined.
Agnes Re-Imagined is a $100M project involving the complete reconstruction of the gallery, set to be complete in 2026. As for the historic Etherington House which this new funding is going towards, the goal is to “turn the house back into a home”, whilst preserving the house’s historic properties.
