On Thursday, New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt announced a long-called-for change to provincial regulations that could have an impact on access to surgical abortions in the province. CHMA spoke with recently re-elected Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton about the announcement, and her feeling of hope as the new provincial government takes power.
“It’s a new government,” says Mitton. “I think there’s a bit of a hopefulness that things will be better and that there will be some real changes happening.”
As for the announced changes to regulation 84-20, Mitton says she applauds the move to “allow reproductive health care to happen in a community setting.”
“But it really is the first step,” says Mitton. “There needs to be actual healthcare professionals that have the training in different areas, and there needs to be community clinics where this could happen.”
