Kingston is joining other Ontario municipalities in opposing the provincial government’s new restrictions on bike lanes.
The proposed bike lane restrictions are part of the Province’s Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, which includes a list of changes to tackle traffic congestion.
The potential bill would require municipalities to seek approval from the provincial government before constructing bike lanes that result in removing lanes for vehicular traffic, along with other restrictions.
Councillor Brandon Tozzo moved that council express their disapproval of the proposal on the grounds that bike lanes are safer, do not hinder traffic flow, and that municipalities should maintain control of their own transportation.
The city’s Active Transportation Master Plan aims to increase active transportation such as bicycling to 20 per cent of all trips by 2034.
