The deadline for people tenting at a homeless encampment on University Avenue in Halifax has come and gone — although some remain on site as the municipality ramps up relocation efforts for those still without a place to go.
In September, city officials notified people they had until November 1 to relocate from the green space, citing safety concerns due to upcoming winter snow-clearing operations.
There are 1,335 residents on Halifax’s by-name list, which tracks people experiencing homelessness throughout the city, as of October 30. About 150 of those people are said to be sleeping outdoors.
CKDU spoke with Max Chauvin, Halifax’s Director of Housing and Homelessness, and Matthew Grant, a volunteer and advocate for Halifax’s unhoused, about what’s being done to address the ongoing crisis.
