The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) has elected a veteran councillor as deputy Mayor.
Eldon MacDonald was nominated uncontested during council’s first official gathering since last month’s municipal election. He’s represented District 5 since 2012.
MacDonald will continue to represent his constituents while filling in for the mayor when Cecil Clarke is unavailable. He will also take a leadership role in helping new and returning councillors work together on important civic issues.
He says that a provincial review of the municipality’s fiscal management is among the top priorities. The review is intended to help city hall find ways of reducing unnecessary spending.
MacDonald says council will use the province’s findings when allocating funds for municipal services and programs. MacDonald will also be council’s liaison for discussions involving police and fire services. His term as deputy mayor will run for one year.
