Students across Nova Scotia are settling into the school year amid a significant change in classroom etiquette — the outright ban of cellphones.
Before the provincial government announced the new directive, cellphone policy was implemented on a school-by-school basis. Now, all students are required to shut off their mobile devices and place them out of sight during lessons.
Nova Scotia joined Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia in restricting the use of mobile devices inside the classroom. Neighbouring New Brunswick introduced similar measures this fall as well.
CKDU was recently joined by Nova Scotia Teachers Union President Peter Day to check in on how the directive is being received – and to get insight into what he’s hearing from teachers on how the policy is affecting the classroom environment.
