Climate activists halted traffic when they scaled the Jacques Cartier Bridge Tuesday morning. The activists, named in a press release as 24-year old Jacob Pirro and 47-year old Olivier Huard, belong to Montreal-based climate action groups Last Generation Canada and Antigone Collective.
Spokesperson for Last Generation Canada, Laura Sullivan, said the action was meant to draw attention to what they say is government inaction on the climate crisis.
Antigone Collective’s largest campaign aims to shut down Enbridge’s Line 9B pipeline within five years. Last Generation Canada is campaigning for Canada to sign onto the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty and adopt a national emergency management agency.
The Sûreté du Québec told CKUT the bridge was was closed from 5 a.m. until noon. They confirmed they had arrested the two activists, who were held in detention overnight.
