The Province of Ontario has announced its plan to invest 1.25 million dollars into the construction of the first Indigenous-led, operated and on-territory hospice in Canada, to be located on Six Nations.
The announcement was made by Ontario Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones on Oct. 16 where she spoke at a press conference at White Pines Wellness Centre in Ohsweken.
The new hospice will be located on Fourth Line Rd. and will provide relevant cultural and traditional support services to those in need. The hospice will include traditional artwork, a garden space, sacred spaces for ceremonies, hospice care including end-of-life nursing and personal support.
Minister Jones says once constructed, annual operational funding for the hospice will be provided by the province.
No timeline was given for when construction will begin. CJKS will be following for more updates.
