A Cape Breton drop-in centre’s inaugural free Thanksgiving meal garnered a huge response from the small community of Sydney Mines.
Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission manager Allana MacLellan says she is not surprised because many people are struggling financially. There are 600 people in the community of roughly 12,000 living below the poverty line. Nova Scotia’s poverty line is marked at an annual household income of $22,000 or less.
MacLellan says the high price of food and rent these days means there are many in Sydney Mines who appreciate a free Thanksgiving meal. MacLellan says the drop-in centre has been busy since they opened their doors in February, and Friday’s turkey dinner demonstrates the valuable resources they are providing.
One hundred people walked through their doors over two hours.
