Qalipu First Nation is one of the owners of the 140 year old St. John’s shipyard, known as Newdock, after a partnership was reached between the band, the Membertou First Nation, and Horizon Naval Engineering to acquire the shipyard in early October.
Qalipu Chief Jenny Brake says “this is one of the most significant First Nations business investments in this province’s history. ” Horizon Naval Engineering President Sean Leet says no changes are needed at this world class ship repair facility.
Leet says they’re excited to be working on a new Indigenous initiative and are looking at an expansion. A large talent pool will be needed to support growth in the blue economy and the Newdock group intends to provide training.
