Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative (AHOI) is trying to get a better understanding of several marine species-at-risk through some ongoing projects.
Research from over 20 years ago suggests that the Acadian redfish, located in the fjord of the East Arm of Bonne Bay, are “globally unique.”
Director of Marine Programs Dr. Jordy Thomson says their main focus is Acadian redfish but they have also partnered with Dalhousie University to research zooplankton offshore various areas in western NL. Thomson says Edgewise Environmental are using hydrophones to acoustically monitor the presence of North Atlantic right whales, blue whales and other marine mammals. Lastly, AHOI will conduct shoreline cleanups to reduce threats posed by plastic pollution and entanglement risk.
