Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week began with a flag raising event at City Hall on Friday.
At the same time, in cities across Canada, protestors with “1 Million March 4 Children” rallied for “parental rights” and restrictions on 2SLGBTQI+ education; the Peterborough gathering for “1 Million March 4 Children” was organized to take place in the same location as Pride Week’s opening ceremony.
At 8 a.m., counter-protestors gathered, under the name “No Space for Hate,” in front of City Hall. When the flag raising began at noon there were nearly 150 supporters for No Space for Hate, but not a single protestor attended for 1 Million March 4 Children.
Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week had a successful opening ceremony without any disturbances from the planned protest. Speakers included organizer, Rick Lambert, Peterborough’s Poet Laureate Ziysah von Bieberstein, and Mayor, Jeff Leal.
