Across from the Adult Day Centre in Old Massett on Haida Gwaii are two new buildings. These modular buildings are not exactly exciting to look at, but the potential inside will change the eating habits for almost all Old Massett community members.
The buildings (which have yet to be named) are full of lights and shelves to grow hydroponic vegetables year round.
Currently, fresh vegetables and fruit that are available in supermarkets on the island have to be ferried over and are very expensive due to the remote nature of the island.
Red Eagle Feather, or Kevin Brown is the Old Massett Climate Action Coordinator. He is thrilled about this new grocer program which will offer healthier solutions grown locally to members of Old Massett.
This project was funded by the Provincial Stronger BC Rural Development Program and cost around $360,000 to get started.
