Council unanimously voted to provide $300,000 to support the Inclusive Play Project in its goal to build the city’s first inclusive playground.
Community members came together to form the Inclusive Play Project within the last year in response to a lack of playgrounds in the city that accommodate all ages and abilities.
In a survey the group conducted recently, 98% of the nearly 200 respondents reported they felt that Kingston playgrounds currently do not meet the community’s needs, and that they did not feel that Kingston playgrounds were inclusive to all.
The project has already raised $200,000, and this extra funding from council brings them to a third of their $1.5M goal.
The project is set to take shape in Shannon Park, and the Inclusive Play Project hopes this structure will be the first of many.
