With about roughly 350 people living on Protection Island, every year community members come together to celebrate Pride and create safes for queer residents.
For the last ten years, the island known for its pirate theme and floating bar, residents come together to put on a Pride parade in the ways they know best, with golf carts.
CHLY attended the tenth-anniversary of the Pride parade and celebration on Protection Island on Aug. 17. About 14 residents decorated their golf carts to the nines with rainbow streamers and balloons before parading around the island as people onlookers cheered them on.
CHLY spoke with drag performer Chrys LoScerbo, who performs under the name “Mannaquinnn,” about the importance on celebrating Pride no matter the size of their community.
As well CHLY spoke with event organizer Wendy Martin about the start of the Protection Island Pride parade and giving a safe space for queer residents on the island.
