In a July 26 press release, the BC Tree Fruits Cooperative announced that they were ceasing operations immediately.
BC Tree Fruits was the company that packaged and marketed many of the British Columbian fruit farmers’ product, a job that some farms don’t have the capacity to do themselves. The organization has been in operation since 1936.
“The board of directors determined that due to extremely low estimated fruit volumes and difficult market conditions, the cooperative would not be able to effectively operate the business and provide pool returns to growers,” the statement released by their board of directors reads.
CICK News requested a comment from BC Tree Fruits, but they are not speaking further on this topic at this time. Jessica Rampling, owner and operator of Guthrie’s Fresh Fruit, sells fruit across the northwest of British Columbia and she spoke to CICK News about the larger effect of this change.
