The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) imagines a future where parts of its Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses are transformed into vibrant community spaces, blurring the line where campus begins.
Abbotsford city council heard on Tuesday, that through a property development arm called UFV Properties Trust, the university would become a landlord, generating rental income on some of the up to 450 residential housing units it believes it can accommodate in Abbotsford.
The university would retain ownership of the land by issuing 99-year prepaid leases.
“In Abbotsford, we are fairly site constrained, we have about six acres,” said Gary Morrison, the chief executive officer of UFV Properties Trust.
UFV has identified 23 acres of land at its Chilliwack campus for development on the Eastern side of campus along Vedder Road. Morrison said that site will require an official community plan amendment and expects to file rezoning applications in 2026.
