Wellington North Council got heated last Monday night over a decision to put out a tender to demolish the Lion Roy Grant Pool in Mount Forest.
Dozens of residents attended the meeting. Resident Tom Potts objected to the $5.5 million cost of building a new pool, arguing that the existing pool could be replaced for far less money.
A staff report included in Monday’s agenda package explained that the bath house did not meet accessibility standards, the pool walls would need to be inspected and repaired, and a new liner and recirculation system were needed at a cost of nearly $200,000.
The pool was closed last year after failing a public health inspection. The Township plans to build a new outdoor pool at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The council approved tendering for the demolition of the pool. When the existing stand pipe reaches the end of its service life in 30 years, a water tower is planned for the site.
