Over the past week the wildfire situation in B.C. has exploded. There are now more than 400 fires burning in B.C. Most fires are concentrated to the southern interior, however there are 10 within the Northwest Fire Centre region, 6 of which are deemed out of control.
Although no evacuation alerts or orders have been issued, residents were reminded of the reality of wildfires when heavy smoke blanketed the community of 5,000 on Saturday evening, creating an ominous red glow in the sky.
In a statement, the BC Wildfire Service said, “due to a shift in winds and weather patterns these communities and others in the Northwest are experiencing smoke from fires south of Ootsa Lake in Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, as well as smoke from fires in southern regions.”
