The “Anti-Racist Kingston” campaign launched on Friday July 19th to raise awareness and provide support to the community.
The campaign was created in response to an increase in racist incidents in the Kingston area. In a community survey, it was found that 40.7% of respondents had personally experienced a racist incident.
“With the increasing numbers of new migrants and international students in Kingston, there has also been an increase in the number of hate and racist incidents,” explains Aba Mortley, Kingston Anti-Racism Co-chair. “We believe that many residents in Kingston and area may not be aware of these occurrences. The fact is that they are happening, and if we all know better, we can all do better to make Kingston a better place.”
Different elements of the campaign will be visible around the city, including visuals on Kingston Transit buses, posters, and social media posts. Resources and tools have also been made available on AntiracistKingston.ca.
