Banners and jerseys with Indigenous symbols will not hang in the newly renovated Jefferson Elora Community Centre for the foreseeable future.
Now, what to do with the Junior B Lacrosse Team’s memorabilia is the subject of a working group stuck after the Ontario Human Rights Commission sent Centre Wellington a letter expressing concerns with the use of Indigenous symbols by the non-Indigenous team.
General manager of the Six Nation Rivermen Jay Smith, who is Mohawk, says to him it seems like teams that use Indigenous symbols are trying to be them and is calling for the team to change its name.
When reached for comment last week, the Elora Mohawks were not available but said they might be willing to speak later this week.
There is no timeline for when the working group will reach a decision.
